SUBJECT: Final decryption of Artifact #1561794
RECIPIENT: [EXPUNGED]
Salutations,
You will be pleased to hear that the decryption of Artefact #1561794 [See Case File 519:48A:MS9:Atm for details] has finally been completed.
Unfortunately, a lot of the data was unrecoverable, and while there are no specific dates for the rest of the data, the chronology has been verified by other sources. As you will see, there is information stored in this artefact that is unverifiable, as it seems that this is the only location of such information, which would suggest the information was purged from all other locations at some point.
All information on who wrote this account and when it was written seems to have been lost, but we can assume that it was a person high up in the Imperium at the time due to the nature of the information. It would seem they had access to things that only the God-Emperor should have known about. Also, any information that would explain why this specific artefact was not purged, and how it came to be where it was discovered, has also been lost.
You will find the decrypted data attached to this communiqué, along with some information I have compiled myself from more recent events, which I hope will be of use.
I do not have to remind you of what would happen if any of this information were to become known to anyone else.
I have colour coded the information, for easy of reading, using the following colouring system:
- Nonspecific entries
- Fire Hawk's entries
- Storm Eagles' entries
- Brotherhood of Steel entries

THE FORGOTTEN, THE PURGED AND THE CLONE
PARTIAL TIMELINE OF THE GREAT CRUSADE
-
Terra is unified by The Emperor using genetically modified soldiers.
-
The Primarch Project, which has taken centuries to prepare and complete, nears it's conclusion, but as the Primarchs are almost ready the Dark Gods of Chaos combine their strength to scatter them across the galaxy.
-
The Primarchs, in their gestation pods, are sent through the warp by the Chaos Gods. The pods are protected by inbuilt Gellar Fields during transit.
-
Having suffered unknown damage, the Gellar Field on pod II collapses and the Chaos Gods have direct access to one of the unborn Primarchs.
-
After the scattering of Primarchs, The Emperor begins to create the twenty Space Marine Legions, using the genetic imprints of his Primarchs.
-
The Great Crusade begins.
-
Pod II crashes on the planet [EXPUNGED], the child Primarch emerges and is found by a local man, who takes the boy as his adopted son. The child is named [EXPUNGED], but would later be known as Fatum.
-
Fatum grows quickly, but is forced into solitude when the other villagers react with unexplainable hostility and mistrust of the child.
-
Once Fatum is fully grown, members of the village try to run him and his adopted father out of the village. A fight ensues and Fatum's father is struck in the head and killed. Grief-stricken and angry, Fatum kills the man responsible, before fleeing into the nearby forest, where he lives for many years in solitude.
-
Horus is the first of the Primarchs to be found, on the planet Chotnia. He is given command of the XVI Legion, the Luna Wolves.
-
Guilliman is found on the planet Macragge. He is given command of the XIII Legion, the Ultramarines.
-
Sanguinius is found on the planet Baal Secundus. He is given command of the IX Legion, the Blood Angles.
-
Peturabo is found on the planet Olympia. He is given command of the IV Legion, the Iron Warriors.
-
Fatum is found by chance on the planet [EXPUNGED], his Untouchable nature having blocked The Emperor's ability to find the Primarch, it is only when The Emperor himself descends to the planet that he feels the effect and searches for the cause. Fatum's Pariah Gene is a worry to the Emperor as it was not his doing. He is given command of the II Legion, the Fire Hawks.
-
Ferrus Manus is found on the planet Medusa. He is given command of the X Legion, the Iron Hands.
-
An accident causes the loss of all of the stored gene-seed for the Fire Hawks. The Emperor uses Fatum's genetic material to create more.
-
Jaghatai Khan is found on the planet Chogoria. He is given command of the V Legion, the White Scars.
-
Lion El'Jonson is found on the planet Caliban. He is given command of the I Legion, the Dark Angles.
-
Kales is found on the planet Helios. He is given command of the XI Legion, the Storm Eagles, and is ordered by The Emperor to secretly investigate Chaos, in order to find a way to defeat it.
-
The Emperor realises that the effects of Fatum's Pariah Gene are causing the other Primarchs to be mistrusting of their brother. To try and stop any problems, The Emperor asks Kales to befriend Fatum, as an example to the others that even a Psyker can overcome the strange effects of the Pariah Gene. Kales manages to put aside the feelings caused by Fatum's Untouchable nature and the two Primarchs become close, though many of the other Primarchs are still wary of Fatum.
-
Losses begin to mount for the Fire Hawks, and so recruitment is started, in order to create new Space Marines. Soon after, it becomes clear that all new recruits to the Fire Hawks also have the Pariah Gene, and large numbers of them are quite powerful Untouchables.
-
New recruits to the Fire Hawks are forced to stay in specialy built areas of their own ships, so as not to interfere with the Astropaths and Navigators on their vessels.
-
Rogal Dorn is found on the planet Invit. He is given command of the VII Legion, the Imperial Fists.
-
As the number of Untouchables within the Fire Hawks increases, some of the Primarchs begin to distance themselves from fighting alongside the Legion.
-
The Emperor decrees that the Fire Hawks shall fight in smaller numbers than other Legions, so the combined effect of their Pariah Genes is not too great.
-
Leman Russ is found on the planet Fenris. He is given command of the VI Legion, the Space Wolves.
-
Fulgrim is found on the planet Chemos. He is given command of the III Legion, the Emperor's Children.
-
The Chaos Gods discover what the Storm Eagles have been doing, and subsequently more than three quarters of the Legion disappears in the warp. All contact with them is lost and it is assumed that a great tragedy befell them. In fact, the Legion is stranded in the warp by the Chaos Gods in order to foil the Emperor's plans.
-
Worried that the truth of what Kales was doing in secret may become known, and not wanting knowledge of the warp and Chaos to spread, The Emperor decrees that all information pertaining to the Storm Eagles is to be destroyed, using the excuse that knowledge of a Primarch and almost an entire Legion being lost could jeopardise the entire Crusade. The Primarchs are all made to vow never to speak of their lost brother again.
-
The remaining Storm Eagles are transferred to the Ultramarines Legion, forming the Legion's 13th Chapter, and use their knowledge to fortify the planets of Segmentum Ultima.
-
The Emperor secretly recovers the information and equipment created by Kales for fighting Chaos, and stores it away in secret for use at a later date.
-
Fatum is grieved by the loss of Kales and becomes more estranged from his brother Primarchs. He once again becomes an outsider.
-
As further restrictions are placed upon the Fire Hawks, Fatum becomes disillusioned with his brothers and decides they are little better than the townsfolk that killed his father and drove him away. However, Fatum is still loyal to his true father, and the Imperium, so he calls his Legion together to decide what to do.
-
Breaking the Emperor's decree, Fatum calls the entire Fire Hawks Legion to [EXPUNGED]. When The Emperor hears of this, he is concerned about what Fatum might be planning and dispatches Leman Russ and the Space Wolves to find out what Fatum is doing, and to stop him if necessary.
-
A Space Wolf scouting fleet arrives in orbit around [EXPUNGED], but moments later, a massive warp storm engulfs the system, destroying the fleet and ravaging the planet. The storm disappears as quickly as it arrived.
-
Fatum's main fleet arrives in the Legion's home system, only to find [EXPUNGED] destroyed, and the wrecks of Space Wolf ships in orbit. Fearing that The Emperor may be moving against the Fire Hawks, Fatum sends a message to all the Fire Hawk fleets that he can contact, telling them to avoid [EXPUNGED] and to rendezvous in another system. Fatum's fleet then jumps back into the warp.
-
The main Space Wolf fleet arrives and finds it's scouting force destroyed. Shortly after this a fleet of Fire Hawks ships arrives, having failed to receive the warning from their Primarch. The commander of the Fire Hawk fleet contacts Leman Russ to demand to know what they have done to the planet, and in return Leman Russ demands to know why the Fire Hawks destroyed his ships. The argument quickly escalates into a battle and the Space Wolves destroy the Fire Hawks ships completely. Leman Russ takes this incident as proof that the Fire Hawks have betrayed the Imperium, and contacts The Emperor with the news.
-
Shortly after, Fatum contacts The Emperor, having received a distress call from the destroyed fleet. Fatum declares that he is still loyal to The Emperor and the Imperium, but The Emperor is so furious over the news Leman Russ has given him that he does not listen. The Emperor declares Fatum and his Legion traitors, and that all data pertaining to and remnants of the Fire Hawks are to be purged. For the second time, a Primarch and his Legion are removed from existence.
-
Knowing that there is no going back, but still feeling loyal to his father, Fatum jumps his Legion into the warp. Moments later a warp storm knocks the fleet off course and it becomes lost in the warp. The Gellar Field on Fatum's ship is sabotaged and once again he is exposed to the warp. As the warp entities slaughter the crew, the Fire Hawks try in vain to save as many as they can, using the effects of their Pariah Gene to protect themselves. On the bridge, a daemon manifests in front of Fatum, killing the bridge crew in the process, and laughs as it tells Fatum that his entire life has been orchestrated by the Gods of the Warp. It explains that the Chaos Gods made Fatum an Untouchable, and brought about the accident that destroyed the stores of Fire Hawk gene-seed, all in order to create an Untouchable Legion. Their plan was to use the Fire Hawks to cause a civil war within the Imperium, as the Legion would be mistrusted and forced to become outsiders, and that only an Untouchable as powerful as Fatum could block The Emperor's powers and kill him.
-
The daemon tries to convince Fatum to return to the Imperium and kill The Emperor, but the Chaos Gods underestimate Fatum's loyalty and he rejects them. Fatum then orders all ships to perform an emergency translation to real space, but as they do so something unexplainable happens, and the Fire Hawks ships disappear, failing to re-enter real space. The Fire Hawks are lost.

Deciding that the time is right, The Emperor secretly creates a clone of Kales, so that the research into Chaos may continue. He names the cloned Primarch Kane.
-
Kane is sent to the planet [EXPUNGED] so that he may grow and be taught everything he will need to know. The Emperor also has all of the remaining Storm Eagles, who are now part of the Ultramarines Legion, sent on a special assignment, and secretly has them sent to the same planet.
-
Kane matures quickly, and with the help of the Space Marines under his command, turns the planet into a Forgeworld. He also renames the remnants of the Storm Eagles, who are now under his command, the Brotherhood of Steel. This name is found in no official documentation though, just as the Primarch himself is not.
-
Kane uses a mix of ancient technology and his own psychic powers to create a stealth system that totally hides the planet from any kind of detection. He then begins work on creating weapons and equipment to fight Chaos.

PERTINENT INFORMATION FROM THE TIMELINE OF THE 41st MILLENIUM
-
The weapons, equipment and tactics created by Kales and Kane are used when creating the Grey Knights.
-
The Fire Hawks name us unwittingly re-used when founding a new Chapter, during the 21st 'Cursed' Founding.
-
The entire Fire Hawks Chapter disappears during a Warp storm.
-
An Imperial research outpost on Genhemor III is attacked by Chaos raiders. Interrogated survivors claim they were saved by Space Marines that appeared from nowhere and then vanished once the battle was won. Survivors held for further questioning.
-
Ultramarines Chief Librarian Tigirius reports that Ork raiders were repulsed with the aid of black armoured Space Marines.
-
Hive fleet Behemoth is stopped by the Ultramarines, mainly due to the pre-Heresy fortifications built by the then-Legion's secretive 13th Chapter.
-
Hive world Terrus saved from a Tyranid attack by Space Marines whose armour was decorated with skulls and flames.
-
Adeptus Explorator team on Cobal II report attack by Machine Warriors. Survivors insist they were aided by mysterious, black armoured Space Marines. No evidence of aggressors or Marines found to corroborate story. Explorator team removed for testing.
-
Reports are correlated of a ghostly force of black armoured Space Marines that appears when Imperial forces are in dire need of help. This force is dubbed the Legion of the Damned.
-
Pict images of a huge warrior fighting amongst the Legion of the Damned shows similarities in size and skill to the Primarchs.
-
The Salamander Strike Cruiser Vulkan's Wrath emerges from the warp into the Salamander's home system. Investigation of the vessel reveals that it was one of the few ships to escape from the Isstvan V Dropsite Massacre. Two ancient Dreadnoughts are found to be the only survivors, as the damage to the ship was too massive for even a Space Marine to survive, and the last log entry from the captain of the vessel states that he transferred all remaining power to the Dreadnought's stasis systems. Venerable Dreadnoughts Ten'Shal and Kiranus are reunited with their brothers.
-
The malfunctioning systems keeping Kane and the Brotherhood of Steel in stasis finally fail, and the Primarch emerges to find an Imperium that has changed dramatically.
-
During the worst of the fighting of the 13th Black Crusade, a fleet of ships emerges from the warp and immediately opens fire on the Chaos forces. After the last Chaos ships are destroyed, the Imperial forces surround the unknown fleet and demand their identification. The unbelievable response from the fleet is that they are the Storm Eagles, and that they have the Primarch Kales aboard. Having never heard of this supposed Legion, due to all the data being destroyed by The Emperor's decree, the fleet commander almost orders his ships to open fire, and it is only due to the intervention of the ancient Salamanders Dreadnought Ten'Shal that the battle was averted.
-
Kales explains that the Legion have been stuck in the warp, constantly fighting Chaos, and only managed to escape due to a daring real-space translation that Kales guided with his psychic powers. The fact that the Legion ended up around 10,000 years in the future from when they left, seems to be of little consequence to Kales.
-
Kales reintegrates his Legion into the Imperium, and renames them The Forgotten, due to there being no reference to the Legion anywhere in the Imperium. The Forgotten take up the fight against Chaos, alongside their successors, the Grey Knights.
-
Kane becomes aware that Kales has returned, and so finally reveals himself to the Imperium. The two Primarchs combine forces, and the Imperium puts Kane's Forgeworld to good use creating weapons and equipment.
-
More and more reports are collected by the Inquisition about sightings of the black armoured Space Marines of the Legion of the Damned.

- The malfunctioning systems keeping Kane and the Brotherhood of Steel in stasis finally fail, and the Primarch emerges to find an Imperium that has changed dramatically.
- During the worst of the fighting of the 13th Black Crusade, a fleet of ships emerges from the warp and immediately opens fire on the Chaos forces.
- Kales explains that the Legion have been stuck in the warp, constantly fighting Chaos, and only managed to escape due to a daring real-space translation that Kales guided with his psychic powers. The fact that the Legion ended up around 10,000 years in the future from when they left, seems to be of little consequence to Kales.
- Kales reintegrates his Legion into the Imperium, and renames them The Forgotten, due to there being no reference to the Legion anywhere in the Imperium. The Forgotten take up the fight against Chaos, alongside their successors, the Grey Knights.
- Kane becomes aware that Kales has returned, and so finally reveals himself to the Imperium. The two Primarchs combine forces, and the Imperium puts Kane's Forgeworld to good use creating weapons and equipment.
- More and more reports are collected by the Inquisition about sightings of the black armoured Space Marines of the Legion of the Damned.
